Since our sugar business began, we have enjoyed steady growth — investing in assets to expand our trading activities:
- In Japan, we operate a sugar refinery and distribute its production locally.
- In southern Brazil (Guaruja), we operate a bulk/bag sugar loading facility.
- We are currently the largest shipper of raw sugar from Brazil.
- We have operated CEVASA ( Central Energetica Vale do Sapucai) since 2006, a cane ill dedicated to the production of ethanol. [For more information (in Portuguese) http://www.cevasa.com.br/]
- In July 2003, Cargill took a minority equity stake in Zucarmex, one of Mexico's largest sugar producers, in the first foreign investment in the sector since the Mexican government decided to nationalize half of the industry in 2001. Zucarmex is one of the three largest Mexican sugar producers that remain private. Cargill also signed an agreement action to make exclusive sales of sugar in the Mexican market.
