I am a financial management trainee working in Cargill’s cocoa and chocolate business. Cargill Cocoa imports cocoa beans mainly from West Africa to Amsterdam. The beans are stored in large warehouses, then shipped by boat or truck to different plants in Holland, Germany, England and France.

Cargill produces three semi-products from the cocoa beans: liquor, powder and butter. These products are sold to major chocolate customers or to our own chocolate plants (Cargill Chocolate).

As a trainee, you are directly assigned to a job with your own responsibilities. I am responsible for the general ledger of the liquor plant in York, England. One of the responsibilities is the P/L closing, balance sheet reconciliation and I am the contact person for my colleagues in the U.K.

As a trainee, you are able to participate in the European Graduate Program, attending classes — communication, problem-solving, decision-making, and cultural awareness — with other trainees from all over Europe. This is a perfect way to create your own international network. For me, Cargill is a company with a hands-on mentality, offering you responsibilities in challenging roles.
