Cargill product recall: Nutrena® Naturewise® Meatbird feed

At Cargill, providing you the best quality products for your animals is a top priority. That’s why we’re conducting a voluntary recall of Nutrena NatureWise Meatbird feed in 40 lb bags due to excess levels of sodium. The affected products were manufactured at Cargill’s facility in West Branch, Iowa on Apr. 28, 2014 and were distributed in Iowa, Illinois and possibly Missouri.

Sodium is an essential nutrient for poultry.  However, excess levels of sodium in diets for meatbirds may result in pulmonary hypertension, increased mortality, reduced growth rate, increased water consumption, wet droppings, and wet litter.  Consumption of the affected feeds may have contributed to poultry illness and death.  Customers should call their veterinarian if their animals have experienced adverse health effects while consuming the affected product.

Cargill is implementing this voluntary product recall as a corrective measure. We have asked our retailers to pull affected products from their shelves. The affected product is:

The lot code is a combination of the plant code and a Julian date code and can be found printed on the bottom left corner of the product tag that is attached to the bag as shown in the image below.

Customers who have purchased the product noted above are asked to return it to the point of purchase for a full refund.
