Cargill statement on H.R. 4432, The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act

Cargill supports bipartisan legislation introduced by U.S. Representative Mike Pompeo of Kansas that would increase the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) oversight of genetically modified organisms (GMO) and set national labeling standards for GMO and non-GMO foods.

The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act would avoid a costly and confusing patchwork of state labeling requirements by giving FDA the authority it needs to decide when foods produced using biotechnology should be labeled. H.R. 4432 also would increase public confidence in the safety of foods sold in the U.S. by requiring FDA pre-market review of new GMOs and make it easier for consumers seeking non-GM foods to identify these products in the marketplace.

The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act is a sound proposal and Cargill pledges to work with Congress and other interested parties to pass it.
