Absorbing and gelling agents in wound dressings
The absorbing and gelling properties of hydrocolloids and alginates are particularly valuable in creating wound dressings. In hydrocolloids dressings, gel forming agents contained in the inner layer are a combination of hydrophilic polymers swelled by absorbing exudates, forming a gel maintained into the elastomer matrix.
By its binding and its gel forming properties, high methoxyl citrus pectin perfectly complements the effects of other hydrocolloids. In alginate dressings, sodium alginates are used for the manufacture of low to high absorbing gels for the treatment of moderate to heavily exuding wounds.
These alginate dressings maintain a physiologically-moist environment that promotes healing and the formation of granulation tissues.
