Improve feeding efficiency
What does dry matter variation cost a dairy operation?
Industry experts have identified feeding management, specifically accurate and frequent assessment of silage dry matters to ensure consistent diet delivery, as one of the key areas of opportunity for dairy operations.
The University of Wisconsin has shown dry matter variation of 6-10% between lots of both alfalfa and corn silages. With today’s precision diets, those variations in dry matter can result in lost production, wasted nutrients, or both.
Which method of analyzing dry matter is best?
The Cargill Elk River Forage Lab conducted a study to compare dry matter samples of corn silage, alfalfa haylage and grass haylage utilizing three different measurement methods:
- Cargill Elk River Forage Lab (gold standard)
- Koster Moister Tester
- Reveal® Analysis
The study found that all three methods had some degree of variation and error, and concluded it’s best to consistently utilize the same method to analyze multiple samples and average the results. In addition, the study also found that samples dried with a Koster Moisture Tester needed between 50-70 minutes to dry completely. Common on-farm practice of drying samples for 40-45 minutes may not adequately remove all moisture, resulting in erroneous dry matter.
