Early in 1856, several citizens of dreamed of a bold business venture: the establishment of a town along the route of the proposed transcontinental railway. By March on the same year, the group had formed the “Columbus Town Company”, named for Columbus, Ohio, where most of the settlers had originally lived. Located in the northeast portion of Nebraska, Columbus has long been an important industrial city for the region. With a population of more than 22,000 people, Columbus is known as the most industrialized city per capita in the State of Nebraska.
As the seat of Platte County, Columbus offers a multitude of activities for residents of all ages. Along with a variety of art exhibits in the area, Columbus is home to five parks, two lakes and nearly 35 miles of canal are readily accessible and offer camping, boating, fishing and picnicking. Cargill employees contribute their time and financial resources to the local community through programs such as Teammates, Big Brothers Big Sisters, United Way, Relay for Life, Rescue Mission and Center for Survivors.
