“We work every day, the right way and for the right reasons.”

With common values and determination to act responsibly, Matthew Alkire thrives in Cargill’s culture of ethical behavior. Alkire champions the humane treatment of cattle as the Hides/Yards Supervisor in the Fort Morgan, Colo., beef facility. His commitment to animal welfare strengthened while growing up tending to cows and calves, and studying animal science at Fresno State.

Not long after being hired as a trainee, Matthew was assigned the responsibility to supervise 30+ employees, their safety, and the care of live cattle and finished products worth millions of dollars. Alkire helps Cargill lead the industry in humane animal-handling training and certification programs for employees. He is a key player in training employees at his facility to provide cattle with a caring environment, minimize distress and ensure quality meat.

Cargill’s ethical behavior within the meat industry goes beyond animal welfare. Through composting operations at our North American beef and pork plants, we have reduced organic waste by more than 70 percent. When we pioneered steam pasteurization—revolutionizing the way the beef industry battles E.coli — we shared the technology freely with our competitors.

No matter who you talk to at Cargill, you will hear numerous examples of our commitment to respect and responsibility. It’s like Alkire says: “We work every day, the right way and for the right reasons.”
