SweetWise® Soluble corn & wheat fibers
Cargill will soon be expanding its sugar reduction portfolio, with soluble corn & wheat fiber solutions based on a patented technology.
The demand for reduced-sugar products continues to rise, amid growing concerns around sugar intake levels. At the same time, front-of-pack labeling systems, such as Nutri-Score, are swaying consumers towards healthier options, and drawing attention to the fiber content in products as it seems that many people are falling short of the recommended daily intake of 25g* of fiber per day. As an excellent solution for sugar reduction and fiber enrichment, the time is right for innovative soluble fibers based on corn & wheat!
Broadening Cargill’s sugar reduction reach
Cargill expects to add soluble corn & wheat fibers (SweetWise®) to its European portfolio of sweeteners, texturizers, and enrichment in the second half of 2022. This complements Cargill’s sugar reduction toolbox, comprised of a broad range of full to no calorie sweeteners, texturizers, and bulking agents.
Based on micro-reactor technology developed in partnership with Germany’s Karlsruhe Institute for Technology, for which Cargill has secured both an exclusive license and granted patents, the soluble fibers help to enable sugar reduction up to 30%, and support calorie reduction and fiber enrichment on top in confectionery, sweet bakery & cereals, ice cream and yogurt & fruit preps, while helping to maintain desired appearance, taste, and texture. Furthermore, achieving a 30% sugar reduction may enable our EU customers to make a “sugar reduced” claim.** However, you do not need to stop there! In certain applications, it may be possible to achieve sugar reduction levels of 50% and beyond, using these fibers.
Product benefits extend to food manufacturing, as Cargill’s new soluble fibers may offer improved stability, easy handling, and scalability, helping to enable formulators to gradually increase the degree of sugar substitution, with limited changes to their recipes.
Cargill may support in achieving a 30% sugar reduction, helping to enable an improved nutritional profile and a “high in fiber” claim in several applications through SweetWise. **
** Subject and pursuant to the specific conditions for making the relevant claim as set out in Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 for Nutrition and Health claims (eg. sugar reduction) and Nutri-Score (santepubliquefrance.fr) for the nutriscore calculations referred in this document.
