Electrical Safety Training Requirements

Nothing matters more than the safety and wellbeing of our employees and contractors. To ensure a safe and healthy workplace, we continue building on foundational programs that have, over the past several years, contributed to significant improvements in our overall safety results.

One critical safety control that we have is to ensure the  contractors that we hire are competent for their tasks, at both company and individual levels. Cargill contractors are expected to be Cargill Safety Qualified before they are allowed to commence work at any Cargill sites.

To meet individual competency requirements, contractor shall provide necessary industry training to workers to enable them to work safely and record details of training given (such as worker’s name, date, topic, and training).  The Contractor must review with and educate all personnel with the accepted of Project/Work Scope EHS procedures and practices prior to the commencement of work.

This training may include, but not limited to a site-specific orientation and quiz, OSHA 10 hr. construction or equivalent training, LIFEsavers and SIF training, Emergency Action Plan, and task-specific training.

All EHS Training and competency documentation (e.g., Record of Orientations, Certifications, Licenses, Qualifications, Competency Assessments, Comprehension Evaluations) shall be maintained on site or on the Cargill Third-party Worker Management Platform if available.

Cargill and Cargill Contractors need to ensure that individual workers comply with Cargill’s Global EHS requirement 5.5.3 Electrical Training and Qualification Procedures.

Electrical safety training gaps can be completed by assigning the relevant eLearning training modules to the individual contractor on Cargill Third-party Worker Management Platform. If Cargill Third-party Worker Management Platform is not available, the individual worker can complete the applicable training(s) on this website as an interim solution and provide the training completion record to Cargill hiring supervisor before individual site access can be granted.

L1: Electrical Safety Awareness Training

This electrical safety training will cover the following topics:

  • Explanation of Electrical Hazards

  • Hazard Recognition

  • Protection Methods

  • Incident Response

  • Safe Working Practices

Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to recognize and describe electrical hazards that they may encounter at the workplace or at home, Learners will also be able to recall risk mitigation methods, incident response procedures, and apply safe working practices for the hazards that are usually encountered at the workplace. There are 39 slides total with a quiz (knowledge check) at the end of each section.

L2:Authorized Electrical Safety Training

This electrical safety training is intended for personnel who perform specific, limited tasks, categorized as operation of electrical equipment. It will cover the following topics:

  • proper selection of electrical personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • safe distances as described by local code

  • specific hazard recognition for entering electrical rooms

Authorized personnel must pass the General Electrical Safety Awareness Training for unqualified personnel (L1) prior to taking this training. By proceeding with the training, you confirm that you have successfully passed the L1 training. There are 13 slides total. The duration of the training is app. 30 minutes.

L3:Electrical Installation, Engineering and Design Safety

This electrical safety training is intended for personnel who execute electrical work.

The personnel is required to complete all 5 modules prior to commencing any electrical work.

  • Module 1: Electrical Hazards
  • Module 2: Hazard Recognition & Risk Assessment
  • Module 3: Electrical Installations
  • Module 4: Safe Working Practices
  • Module 5: Incident Response & Cargill Electrical Safety Policy

This electrical safety training is intended for personnel executing electrical work. It will cover the following topics:

Risk of Electric Shock

Arc Flash / Arc Blast

Risk of fire

Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to recognize, describe and assess these electrical hazards that they may encounter at the workplace and name the root causes for the hazards. There are 18 slides total with a quiz (knowledge check) at the end of the training. The duration of the training is app. 30 minutes.

This electrical safety training is intended for personnel executing electrical work. It will cover the following topics:

  • Impact of voltage levels for the risk of electric shock
  • Approach distances and boundaries to mitigate electric shock and arc flash risks, arc flash risk assessment
  • The concept of hierarchy of control to mitigate electrical risks

Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to recognize and assess the electrical hazards that they may encounter at the workplace and to deploy risk mitigation methods in line with concept of the hierarchy of controls. This module builds on Module 1 and it is highly recommended that trainees take module 1 first. There are 16 slides total with a quiz (knowledge check) at the end of the training. This electrical safety training is intended for personnel executing electrical work. It will cover the basic electrical protection methods that are implemented in the electrical installation code worldwide.

This training has two pathways: One pathway is describing the North American code NEC while the other pathway describes the international code IEC. Trainees can select either of the two pathways.

Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to name the basic protection method measures which are included in the electrical codes against electric shock, arc flash and fire and smolder. They will be able recognize none code compliances in electrical installations and how to mitigate them. This module builds on Modules 1 and 2 and it is highly recommended that trainees take these modules first.

There are 19 slides total with a quiz (knowledge check) at the end of the training. The duration of the training is app. 37 minutes for the NEC pathway and 47 min for the IEC pathway.
