Cargill and The Coca-Cola Company are working in partnership to develop and introduce the industry’s first natural, zero-calorie sweetener. Called rebiana*, the sweetener will help meet consumer demand for natural, reduced-calorie food and beverage options. Rebiana comes from the leaf of the stevia plant, which was discovered more than 200 years ago in South America and used as a sweetener in various parts of the world for more than two decades.  Rebiana consists of only the best-tasting components of the stevia leaf, and does not have a lingering aftertaste.  Together, the companies plan to offer rebiana to sweeten a variety of foods and beverages for consumers around the world to enjoy.  This marks Cargill’s entry into the high-intensity sweetener market.

Current Status
Plans call for rebiana first to be introduced by The Coca-Cola Company in its family of beverages and as a food ingredient by Cargill.  A comprehensive research and development program is underway to scientifically establish the safety of rebiana and to ensure consistent quality and supply.  The partners plan to introduce the product first in markets where stevia already has regulatory acceptance, and in the U.S. and Europe when all regulatory requirements have been met. The purpose of the research is to address the identified gaps in the existing science and to provide rigorous data to support future regulatory submissions.

*Rebiana is the common and usual ingredient name.
