Cargill introduces Lyveum an ultra vegetable oil set to revolutionize the cosmetics market
The ingredient comes from renewable sources and its high performance suits applications for any product in the category
São Paulo - Oct. 5, 2016 – Cargill today introduced a new ingredient category: Ultra Oils. Developed in Brazil by Cargill Industrial Specialties by combining the natural properties of vegetable oils with the company’s exclusive technology and knowledge in lipids.
Ultra Oils represents an unprecedented level of purity for oils and oil products. Produced from renewable sources, they can be used on a global scale in many product categories. This new technology’s sustainability and high performance prompted the creation of the Lyveum™ brand, which will be introduced during the in-cosmetics Latin America trade fair at São Paulo’s ExpoCenter Norte on Oct. 5 and 6.
The patent for this technology is filed and was developed in less than two years by Cargill Industrial Specialties, in Mairinque, SP. The company invested US$300,000 in product development, testing, initial production, and minor changes to existing plant equipment. Production will start in October 2016, and initial output will be 150 metric tons per month. Cargill’s goal is to produce 1,000 metric tons per month at its peak and earn $18 million in revenues per year.
In addition to its knowledge of the vegetable oil supply chain, Cargill has the technology, expertise, and innovation capabilities that will enable it to supply safe and sustainable supplies. According to Paulo Hoffmann, general manager of Cargill Industrial Specialties in Brazil, the company is moving globally into the personal care segment. “The new technology makes Cargill a player in this segment and reinforces the company’s pioneering spirit and environmental concern. We resort to innovative approaches to save resources, employ renewable raw materials, and reduce impact, to help preserve and protect the environment,” he added.
Lyveum offers an alternative to the use of mineral, synthetic, and animal products in cosmetic formulations, such as sunscreens, shampoos, conditioners, moisturizing creams, ointments, makeup products, and lipsticks. This ensures performance, oxidative stability, and longer shelf life in relation to other products available on the market today. Lyveum increases product stability from six months to up to three years, without using metals or antioxidants.
“The personal care market is increasingly driven by consumers who have a growing interest in the origin of the ingredients used in the final products and in their impact on personal health and wellbeing,” pointed out Cintia Baradel, Cargill account manager and cosmetics specialist. According to Baradel, Cargill’s broad portfolio of vegetable-based ingredients, combined with the company’s commitment to develop socially and environmentally relevant and high-impact aspects is the perfect response to meet the need for more natural and sustainable ingredients that do not jeopardize product performance.
Another unique aspect is that the vegetable chain features a greater variety of raw materials with many properties that differ from those of mineral, animal, and synthetic oils. Moreover, these ingredients have renewable, certified, and sustainable sources. The product’s sensory attributes and the elimination and/or reduction of antioxidants meets clean label requirements – products with the fewest chemical products possible, is cleaner and renewable sources, and which is a consumer demand and trend worldwide.
