Satelligence deploys anti-deforestation solutions across Cargill’s soy, palm oil and cocoa supply chains
(August 8, 2023) Cargill teams up with Satelligence to enhance the company’s robust monitoring capabilities for soy, palm oil and cocoa supply chains in support of being deforestation-free in these supply chains by 2030. Given the company’s size and reach, Cargill is uniquely positioned to help lead the transformation of the food system to meet global challenges, including deforestation and climate change. Partners like Satelligence are critical to ensure Cargill has lasting solutions that will protect, regenerate and restore landscapes that nourish people, animals and the planet.
As part of their collaboration, Satelligence will provide Cargill with near-real time, satellite-powered deforestation risk monitoring across its soy, palm oil and cocoa supply chains, to deliver on the company’s sustainability commitments.
“We’re thrilled to announce this partnership with Cargill, which will help them build on their sustainability commitments, and cut deforestation out at the source, with near-real time risk monitoring throughout the supply chain,” said Niels Wielaard, CEO, Satelligence.
“At Cargill, we understand that mitigating the impact of climate change is crucial to global food security, and protecting vital ecosystems plays a central role. That is why as a company we are laser focused on deforestation- and conversation-free initiatives,” said Matt Wood, Cargill’s Global Impact Data, Analytics and Technology Lead. “In addition to our monitoring work with partners like, Satelligence, we are also accelerating our efforts and investment with new programs that will protect and restore essential landscapes while providing meaningful pathways for farmers to advance their livelihoods.”
Key components of Satelligence’s solution are:
- Reliability: Methodologies are open-source, science-based and certified by Ernst & Young;
- Real time: Satellite sensor-independent system with daily updates across geographies;
- Prioritisation: Reduced data overload due to forest baseline, supply chain data incorporation and smart filters;
- Local context: understanding supply chains and differences in dynamics between geographies;
- Regulation: Measure verified deforestation free percentage and scope 3 emissions for net zero.
Together, Cargill and Satelligence expand on the strong foundation Cargill has laid in this area to create even greater supply chain transparency and visibility.
