Cargill partners with farmers throughout the world, bringing access to markets and helping farmers thrive, while enabling high quality and security of supply for our customers.
In Europe, we work through cooperatives and private country dealers to secure our barley and provide feedback and support. This is done through educating the cooperatives on why a maltster like Cargill has requirements for quality, specifications, and variety. We work directly with these cooperatives to communicate and provide feedback to the growers, either through presentations outlining our industrial process of converting barley to malt, or through onsite visits to one of our malting facilities.
Our facilities in North America sponsor grower appreciation days to give back to our farmers and thank them for all their hard work. Members of the barley merchandising team make on-site visits at our grower’s farms to provide one-on-one, personalized feedback and advice on how to best maximize yields and quality. Industry experts are brought in to talk with growers on how to increase their yields and quality. The Idaho Falls location has a test plot set up that grows multiple varieties of malting barley and is used as a teaching tool to demonstrate which varieties grow best and give farmers feedback for their next crop cycle. We also act as a network connect between brewers and growers, providing customers with onsite visits at the grower’s farm and setting up collaboration between end customers and the source of their supply. Finally, we can custom tailor solutions to match the needs of our growers. Whatever the problem is, we can provide options and innovative solutions to address it.
Cargill Malt also facilitates meetings between growers, cooperatives, and brewers for dedicated barley programs. We bring customers and growers together, giving the customers the opportunity to present to farmers on their activity, prospects for the coming years, and market share progress for their sponsored program, while also providing farmers a chance to ask questions and provide input and feedback on the programs performance. Additionally, we participate in trial field visits and analysis performed by cooperative agronomists. Working together with the agronomists and growers ensures that varieties are chosen that deliver the right specifications for malting and brewing, while also ensuring high agronomic yields for the customer. Collaborating throughout the supply chain provides better results for our customers, while also providing value to our growers.
