Cargill opens first canola refinery in Canada

WINNIPEG - July 23, 2015 – Cargill Limited is proud to announce the company’s footprint in Canada’s canola industry now spans the entire food value chain – from the creation of specialty seed breeding to seed crushing to oil refining with the opening of a new state-of-the-art canola refinery located in Clavet, Saskatchewan.

Clavet refinery.
The new facility has the capacity to refine one billion pounds of canola oil annually, making it the largest Cargill refinery in North America.

“This is a very exciting time for Cargill,” said Scott Portnoy, Corporate Vice President and Platform Leader for Cargill Food Ingredients & Systems. “This new refinery means everything from the canola seeds grown to specialty consumer oils we refine are being produced right here in Canada, further highlighting Cargill’s commitment to Canada’s canola industry.”

The new facility has the capacity to refine one billion pounds of canola oil annually, making it the largest Cargill refinery in North America. This major investment demonstrates the company’s confidence in the continued growth and competitiveness of the canola industry in Canada and Saskatchewan.

"Saskatchewan can produce and process the food products the world wants," Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart said. "This new refinery is a prime example of the opportunity that exists in the valued-added sector and we commend Cargill for their continued investment in our province and building on the incredible success of our agriculture and processing industry."

Cargill operates six businesses in Saskatchewan across 28 locations with over 550 employees. We continue to increase our footprint with new builds, expansions, and upgrades to existing infrastructure. Approximately 100 jobs were created during construction of the refinery, and 30 new permanent positions were created to run the new facility in Clavet.
