Cargill in Ghana

Cargill has been sourcing cocoa from Ghana for over 40 years and in 2008 opened its state-of-the-art cocoa processing facility in Tema. Today the company has around 240 employees processing cocoa products to service food and confectionary customers locally and around the world. In 2016 Cargill added a Licensed Buying Company (LBC) to its Ghanaian footprint. The LBC operations bring innovative ways to trade with our farmers placing emphasis on our sustainability and traceability efforts.

Investments

2019  $3.2 million investment into sustainability programming with partners CARE and the International Cocoa Initiative. Cargill also builds new schools and school infrastructure.

2019 Expansion of the Ghanaian cocoa processing plant capacity.

2016 Cargill added a Licensed Buying Company (LBC) to its operations in Ghana, allowing for direct sourcing from Ghanaian farmers and a more efficient implementation of the Cargill Cocoa Promise at scale.

2016 Cargill and CARE agree on the PROSPER project (Prosperous Communities) which is a school building program intended to address the educational gap in 250 communities in the Western North region in Ghana.

2014 Investment in the CORIP project (Cocoa Rehabilitation and Intensification program) with co-financing from the Dutch Government. $1.6 million was invested, including 25% from the Dutch Government, benefitting 12,000 farmers.

2013 Cargill renews partnership with CARE to support cocoa farmers in Ghana to increase incomes of farming families and improve primary education for over 12,500 children.

2012 Launch of The Cargill Cocoa Promise, a global commitment to improve the livelihoods of farmers and their communities and to secure a long-term supply of cocoa.

2010 Cargill announced a three-year $5 million commitment to support sustainable cocoa in Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire.

2008 Cargill officially opens its $100 million cocoa processing facility in Tema.
