Cargill in Kenya

History of Cargill Presence in Kenya

Cargill Kenya Limited (CKL) is part of Cargill Agricultural Supply Chain (CASC) Enterprise and falls under Europe Middle East & Africa (EMEA) - Sub-Saharan Africa region. The Mombasa business has been in operation since 1948 when Ralli Brothers built and operated a cotton business in East Africa.  Cargill presence in Kenya started in 1984 after Cargill acquired Ralli Brothers. Cargill Kenya Limited is the oldest footprint of Cargill in Africa.

Cargill Activities in Kenya

Today, Cargill Kenya Limited has 159 employees based in Nairobi, Nakuru and Mombasa. Activities in the country include grain origination, trading in wheat, maize, barley, soybean meal, tea sourcing, handling and related services. In 2014 Cargill acquired Lesiolo Grain Handlers Limited (LGHL), a bulk grain handling company based in the Nakuru region of Kenya, strengthening our ability to offer products and services to commercial farmers and smallholders in Kenya. In 2015 our animal nutrition business expanded its operations to include Kenya, where, in close collaboration with our grain and oilseeds businesses we supply key inputs such as macro minerals, amino acids and premixes to Kenya’s growing feed and animal industry.

Mombasa Tea Business

Cargill’s Tea business in Mombasa facilitates the auction, blending and export of made teas to the major tea consuming countries. Presently, Cargill is the largest buyer of tea from the weekly Mombasa auction with a market share of about 15-20%. On an annual basis, Cargill purchase about 60,000 MT of tea from the auction valued at approx. USD 180 - 210 million.

The Tea Business operates 6 warehouses with a total warehousing capacity of close to 20,000 square metres. It is certified to quality management system standard ISO 9001:2008 and food safety system certification FSSC 22000. Overall, the tea business handles over 110,000 MT of tea annually.
