Empowering vegetable farmers in Brazil, “grain by grain”

June 14, 2016

Efforts to empower Brazil’s vegetable farmers through farmer training and diversified production are producing impressive results as part of the “grain by grain” project (Projeto de grão em grão). Since 2014, small family farms in the communities of Santarém and Sao Jose do Rio Pardo have taken part in the project to strengthen their livelihoods, increase the supply of vegetables and improve food security. As a result, participants on average have tripled their incomes while cutting pesticide use by 90 percent. The grain by grain project has been developed by Fundação Cargill (Cargill Foundation) in partnership with Instituto BioSistêmico (IBS). Watch the video.
