Addressing climate change
Setting and measuring performance goals
We began measuring greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from all our facilities in 2006. Our GHG inventory covers more than 1,100 locations on a global basis and encompasses 15 different manufacturing technologies. Our inventory includes both emissions generated from our own operations (Scope I) and from energy we buy (Scope II). Our inventory is based on the internationally accepted Greenhouse Gas Protocol developed by the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council on Sustainable Development.
We’ve set a May 2015 corporate goal of improving GHG intensity by 5 percent from our fiscal 2010 baseline. We are in the process of expanding our inventory to include transportation-related emissions. We’ve made measurable progress on our 2010 goal of reducing GHG emissions by 8 percent per metric ton of production from our fiscal 2006 baseline, but did not achieve that goal. However we’ve gained numerous skills and processes along the way that will help us continue to make progress in reducing our carbon footprint.
