Biofuels from renewable feedstocks

Biofuels made from renewable feedstocks — including corn, soybeans, wheat or cellulose — have captured worldwide attention. With US $1 billion invested in biofuel production, Cargill is the fourth largest producer of biofuels in the United States, in addition to having production facilities in Europe and Brazil.

The booming market for biofuels, including ethanol and biodiesel, also raises important questions.

Generating demand. Biofuels generate increased demand for agricultural feedstocks such as corn, soybeans, cereals and sugarcane, which provides opportunities for farmers and traders and the promise of greater energy security. However, there is a pressing need for dialogue among governments, industry and the public to build an understanding of how the world’s need for affordable food and energy intersect. We help develop a balanced, market-driven approach to ensuring an affordable food supply and a sustainable energy industry.
