MINNEAPOLIS, MN. Cargill today announced it is making a $5 million donation to organizations dedicated to fighting hunger in communities where the company does business. Minnesota-based charities will receive more than $1 million of that contribution.

“Hunger relief agencies tell us the worldwide economic downturn is creating a growing demand for their services at a time when donations are shrinking,” said Greg Page, Cargill chairman and chief executive officer. “In light of Cargill’s mission to nourish people, we are making this donation to help address immediate shortfalls of food for families in need.”

The $5 million gift, includes:

    • $500,000 to the Salvation Army in Minnesota;

    • $500,000 to Second Harvest Heartland in Minnesota;

    • Up to $2 million through local Cargill businesses and Cargill employee volunteer groups for local community foodbanks/hunger relief agencies;

    • $1 million to Feeding America (formerly named America’s Second Harvest and a Cargill national partner); and

    • $1 million to Global Foodbanking Network for targeted relief efforts in countries where Cargill has a presence.

Last month, Cargill contributed to Twin Cities’ food relief efforts by joining CHS, Land O’ Lakes and General Mills in pledging $40,000 in groceries during the Salvation Army’s 2008 Kettle Kickoff. Cargill’s CEO Page serves as the Salvation Army’s Christmas campaign chair.

In 2008, Cargill supported efforts in more than 50 countries with a record $44 million in contributions and $19 million in future commitments. Those efforts include partnerships with organizations such as CARE and the World Food Programme that focus on long-term solutions to health and nutrition, education and environmental issues.
