Sustainable and Responsible Palm Oil
Palm and biofuels
High crude oil prices and government subsidies and policies have driven the increased global demand for using palm oil to create biofuels. In July 2006, Malaysia and Indonesia announced they would reserve 40 percent of their annual palm output for biodiesel.
We believe biofuels can play a role in meeting global energy needs but should be balanced with the critical needs of providing food for a growing global population. We favor government and regulatory policies that are market-driven and based on open trading arrangements to ensure crop use is consistent with market demands and to avoid unnecessary pressures on food and feed supply systems.
We encourage policymakers to consider the impact of biofuels promotion on food and feed supply chains, as well as the impact of choices around land and crop use. We support biofuels production and use that proves to be environmentally beneficial and remain committed to participating in business opportunities from renewable resources around the world across food, feed and fuel products.
