Cargill Enhances its Net Energy Approach for Pork Producers
MINNEAPOLIS – Cargill has announced a significant enhancement to its industry-leading net energy system of nutrients for young pigs. Cargill’s net energy system has evolved through major innovation since its first use in 1986. This enhancement supports pork customers to more precisely predict daily weight gain in young pigs. The net energy system forms the cornerstone of Cargill’s new approach being introduced this month under the theme “Strong finishes start here.”
“The new net energy nutrient definition was designed specifically for the young pig,” explained Kevin Touchette, an innovation development manager at Cargill’s Innovation Center in Elk River, Minn. “This approach will make a difference to enhance weight growth in young pigs.”
The new approach more precisely gauges the net energy needs of a young pig, especially since they gain a higher proportion of their body weight in protein. This contrasts with the net energy approach for finishing hogs that gain a lower proportion of body weight in protein. “This innovative approach leads to more consistent caloric intake and pig weight gains,” noted Istvan Szorad, brand manager. “Providing young pigs sufficient dietary fuel for growth after weaning is essential for today’s pork production needs.”
Brand Manager Brian Knudson notes that other key nutrients and ingredients are included in the new approach. “The new approach is designed to encourage young pigs to consume more essential nutrients, faster,” said Knudson. “This is critical, considering the exacting and often differing requirements demanded today by customers in the United States as well as Europe, Asia and elsewhere.”
Pork producers are encouraged to contact their local Cargill representative to learn more about the net energy approach.
