Cargill starts construction of animal feed mill at Efremov industrial complex

COBHAM, UK — Cargill has begun construction of an animal feed mill at its Efremov site in the Tula region of Russia, a further investment of US$10 million into the company’s production facility. Production is due to commence in 2007 with a capacity of 250,000 metric tonnes per year of feed.

Cargill acquired its Efremov corn sweeteners plant in 1995. In recent years, the company has further developed the Efremov site by investing in a malt plant, an additional sweeteners plant using wheat and a vegetable oil refinery, all of which will be fully operational next year. The feed mill will benefit from its proximity to these existing facilities and will receive almost all of its raw materials from them. These raw materials will then be used to produce nutritional feed products for livestock producers. The mill will produce feed for the Russian beef, poultry, dairy and pork industries and also specialty value-added ingredients which can be added to customers’ existing animal feed.

“Cargill is committed to nourishing people around the world”, says Andrew Glass, the company’s country manager in Russia. “This extends to the livestock and poultry industries: animals need nutrients in order to grow and remain healthy.

Russia continues to develop and grow its animal protein production on a large scale and this investment emphasises our commitment to both the Tula region and Russian agriculture primary processing. Our global expertise in the animal nutrition industry combined with strong research and development capabilities will bring significant benefits for local customers.”

The mill will employ 30 locally-hired staff, including a specialist sales and marketing team.

Cargill in Efremov

Cargill made its first investment in Efremov in 1995 when it acquired a starches and sweeteners plant. Since that time, the company has invested more than US$60 million in upgrading the facility, which has become a significant supplier of corn syrup and starch in Russia. In the past two years, Cargill has built a malt plant and an additional sweeteners plant at the same location, investments totaling more than US$100 million. The company is also constructing a vegetable oil refinery at the Efremov complex that will produce a range of liquid oils for the Russian market under the Sunny Gold brand and supply Russian own label and food service customers. The refinery will commence production in spring 2007. Cargill currently employs more than 700 people in Efremov.
