Cargill & PT Budi Acid Jaya Tbk to convert waste to energy on Indonesian Cassava Starch Plants
SINGAPORE – Cargill today announced an agreement with PT Budi Acid Jaya Tbk to construct, finance and manage anaerobic digesters at their cassava starch plants in Way Jepara and Unit 6 - Lampung, Sumatra. The digesters will capture and convert cassava effluent from the two plants into 4,500 tones of methane gas per year. The methane will be used to power gas generators to produce electricity for the plants. The project will reduce the greenhouse gas equivalent of 950,000 tons of carbon dioxide going into the atmosphere over a 10-year period. The technology, which is being managed and funded by Cargill’s Environmental Finance group, will also generate carbon credits that can be traded on global climate exchanges.
“We are extremely pleased to be working closely with Cargill’s Environmetal Finance Team in developing this opportunity, said Santoso Winata , PT BAJ’s President Director. “The digester will substantially reduce odors while creating a renewable energy source which will help us reduce our overall operating costs. By entering into this agreement, Cargill has committed to the responsibility to develop, fund and implement this project with us. That allows us to concentrate on our core business, which is producing cassava starch for both the Indonesian and export markets.”
This digester, which will be registered with United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) as part of the Kyoto Protocol, is one of many such projects Cargill is developing in Indonesia. “PT BAJ should be congratulated for its proactive approach to environmental stewardship,” said Cargill Environmental Finance Asia General Manager Michael Loefler. “This project goes far beyond what regulations require and demonstrates PT BAJ’s commitment as a responsible corporation in reducing their overall carbon foot print.”
