Cargill to develop “green” biomass energy system at

ALCON-Honduras facility

SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras – Cargill today announced it will convert from conventional fuel oil to biomass to power its ALCON-Honduras animal nutrition facility in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. A soon-to-be-installed biomass boiler is expected to convert approximately 12,620 tons of shredded wood and sawdust per year into energy to run the facility, replacing the consumption of about 436,800 gallons of processed fuel oil annually.

The fuel switch is being conducted under the Kyoto Protocol’s “Clean Development Mechanism (CDM),” which allows industrialized countries to fulfill some of their greenhouse gas reduction commitments by investing in projected to reduce emissions in developing countries. The process will be managed by Cargill’s Environmental Finance group and will reduce by approximately 10,000 tons the amount of annual carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. The project will be sent to the United Nations for registration early next year.

"ALCON-Honduras is very excited to contribute to the betterment of our environment through this Clean Development Mechanism biomass project,” said Ruth Lainez, general manager for Cargill Animal Nutrition’s ALCON- Honduras business. “This project will significantly replace our fuel oil consumption with biomass consumption, providing clean energy, decreasing overall energy costs in our production process, and creating additional value for both Cargill and our feed business customers."

“ALCON- Honduras should be congratulated for its proactive approach to environmental stewardship,” said Sylvio Petto Neto, director of operations and strategy for Cargill Environmental Finance. “This project not only demonstrates ALCON-Honduras’ commitment to the use of renewable energy but opens the channel for collaboration between ours and other businesses that want to follow this example.”
