New South Shore poster honoring Cargill Hammond’s centennial to get gala unveiling Friday

HAMMOND, Ind. - As part of the Cargill Hammond corn milling plant’s 100th anniversary celebration, a South Shore Poster will be unveiled at a reception and ceremony on Friday, Feb. 9, at historic Phil Smidt Restaurant, 1205 Calumet Ave. in Hammond. The event takes place from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m., with the actual unveiling set for about 5:30 p.m.

Titled “Nourishing People for over 100 years,” this is the latest in a series of posters meant to promote northwest corner of Indiana bordering Lake Michigan. The original South Shore posters were a regular series that ran on the South Shore rail line during the 1920s. Numbering about 50, the posters became collector’s items. The poster series was revived in 1996 as a way to promote tourism and economic development in the region. There are over 60 posters in the current series.

The poster’s creator, Mitch Markovitz, will be guest speaker. Markovitz is a commercial illustrator and artist based in Knox, Ind. In 1996 he named and became the founding artist and art director for “Just Around the Corner,” the renowned series of posters focusing on life in Northwest Indiana.

Cargill’s Hammond corn plant began as the home of Western Glucose in 1906 and was reformed as American Maize Products in 1908. While the steel mills in Gary literally overshadowed “Amaizo,” as it was known, the business has historically been significant for the Hammond area and an important part of community life. In 1995 the business was acquired by Cerestar, an Eridania Béghin-Say Company, which in turn was acquired by Cargill in 2002. Today, Cargill Hammond is a center of foodstarch production for Cargill, employing about 260 people in the production of cornstarches and other corn-based products used to thicken, add texture and coat diverse foods from baked goods to meats to marshmallows.
