Cargill and Robinson Steel finalize joint venture

MINNEAPOLIS and EAST CHICAGO, Ind. - Cargill, a leading global trader, processor and distributor of iron and steel, and Robinson Steel, a leading producer of sheet and plate from coil and laser-cut parts, have formed Cargill Robinson, LLC.
The venture has a capacity of 200,000 tons per year of panel-flat, cut-to-length, hot-rolled steel from a jointly owned 100,000-square-foot production facility located in Granite City, Ill. Cargill is a licensed distributor of RPS® Sheet and Plate and will have access to production from Robinson's other Granite City and East Chicago, Ind. processing lines. Terms were not disclosed.
In a joint statement, Mike Taylor, president of Cargill’s Steel Service Centers, and Paul Labriola, president and CEO of Robinson Steel, said-- “We are pleased that we can bring together two organizations to create a new, completely global supply chain. Our resources and capabilities are unique in the marketplace.”
Robinson Steel is headquartered in East Chicago. In addition to cold reduction lines, it operates seven RPS® Laser Production and Distribution centers, providing precision-cut parts to OEM’s (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and fabricators.
Locations include Pomona, Mo.; Davenport, Iowa; Arlington, Texas; Statesville, N.C.; Opelika, Ala; East Chicago; and Granite City, Ill.
In April 2007, Cargill acquired the assets of Loudon, Tenn.-based Olympic Metals, which offers stretcher-leveled, cut-to-length sheets, blanking and coil slitting capabilities. Cargill currently operates seven flat-rolled steel service centers with over 245 employees, focusing on hot-rolled band, pickled and oiled, cold-rolled and tin mill products. Locations include East Chicago, Ind.; Houston, Texas; Tulsa, Okla.; Panama City, Fla.; Loudon, Memphis and Nashville, Tenn.
