“Green glow” cast by energy efficiency improvements at Cargill Schuyler, Nebraska, beef processing facility

If passersby driving on U.S. Highway 30 notice a green glow coming from Cargill’s Schuyler, Neb., processing facility, there is no need to worry. That is because the glow is probably due to the environmental and dollar cost-saving benefits being generated from $4.2 million in recently completed lighting and boiler upgrades inside the half-million-square-foot plant.

EFSA issues positive opinion on Cargill’s petition for Article 14 health claim cholesterol-lowering language on barley betafiber (beta-glucan)

European food and beverage manufacturers will soon be able to use a stronger health claim on products that contain Barliv® barley betafiber (beta-glucan). In a summary scientific opinion by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in December 2011, the panel confirmed a cause-and-effect relationship between barley beta glucans and lower/reduced blood cholesterol.

Cargill to modernize, consolidate Iowa soybean crush operations

Cargill will invest approximately $20 million this summer to modernize its soybean crushing plant on the east side of Cedar Rapids. Additional work at the Cedar Rapids facility over the next several years could bring the total investment to $60 million.

Cargill’s arachidonic acid-rich oil authorized as a novel food by the European Commission

Cargill’s arachidonic acid-rich oil (ARA) has been authorized as a novel food (NF) by the European Commission for use in infant formula and follow-on formula (formula for older children) under Commission Directive 2006/141/EC, commonly know as the infant formula directive. Cargill officially received the European Commission’s letter of authorization on Dec. 19, 2011.
