Cargill collaborates with farmers, food makers and industrial customers to bring new ideas to the table.

Natural bio-based products for oilfields and drilling muds.

Oilfield applications

Cargill is your partner on the ground and underneath

Stringent timelines, challenging logistics and environmental concerns weigh heavily on the oilfield industry. Cargill continues to develop and customize resources for drilling, completion, and work-over fluids as well as service and production chemicals.

Our Xanthan gum helps drills reach further and run freely, control fluid loss, provide temperature stability and maximize solids removal and hydraulic efficiency.

Polyglycerols, vegetable oils, esters, salt, starches and organic acids can be used to impart unique functionality. Our global technical specialists are ready to assist you with your needs.

Product overview
  • Xanthan gum
Xantham gum is the most commonly used hydrocolloid in the oilfield industry because it maintains high viscosity levels under low shear conditions, providing efficient solids transport and suspension characteristics. It can be used with a wide range of drilling fluid additives in a variety of fluid formulations.

  • Starches
Starches are an environment-friendly drilling mud additive for water-based fluids. Specific native, modified or pregelatinized starch is selected depending on application, geological conditions and properties desired.

  • Agri-Pure® Gold™ vegetable oils
Agri-Pure® Gold™ technical grade vegetable oils are excellent low cost alternatives to current vegetable oils in a variety of oil field applications. They have proven successful in a variety of applications as a chemical ingredient in ester and imidazoline production. They also are easily emulsifiable and provide highly stable emulsions compared to petroleum based systems.

  • Oxi-Cure® oils
Select the Oxi-Cure® 500 series. These are 100% natural polyglycerols that provide a variety of functional benefits in drilling mud formulations, particularly shale inhibition. They are available in various degrees of polymerization to allow the formulator to zero in on the exact performance requirement.

  • Glycerin
Glycerin can be used "as is" in oilfield applications as a component in completion fluids and fracture fluids. Glycerin can also be reacted to make polyglycerols for drilling muds formulated for shale stabilization.

  • Salt
When it comes to drilling, Cargill’s Driller’s Choice® evaporated and fine rock salts are always ready for action.

Cargill manufactures industrial starch and related products for paper making, corrugating, adhesive, chemical industry, bio industry and oil drilling applications.
