Worker at a cocoa plantation

Ghana

In early 2007, Cargill’s cocoa and chocolate business started the construction of its Tema cocoa processing plant. The facility started operations in September 2008 and has an annual processing capacity of 65.000 metric tonnes of cocoa beans. Built with the latest technology and processing cocoa according to the highest food safety standards it has become a real asset in supplying high quality cocoa powders and cocoa butter to global food manufacturers.

Our cocoa powders produced in Tema need no further processing elsewhere and are ready to be used by the worldwide food industry. As such As such this world class processing plant is adding significant value to Ghana’s cocoa beans and employs approximately 200 permanent staff, 200 daily contractors and many more indirectly employed,  supporting Ghana’s growing economy.

Traditionally Ghanaian cocoa beans are known to be the among the finest in the world.  These beans, combined with Cargill’s many years of expertise in processing cocoa, end up as very high quality products. The  Ghanaian cocoa powders are offered as part of the Gerkens® range of cocoa powders, and have a unique, mild and rounded flavour. Reflecting the quality of the Ghana cocoa beans the cocoa powders are sold under the ‘The good taste of Ghana'  banner and as such customers are now able to benefit from new colours and flavours in natural, lightly and highly alkalised types.
