Global Water Challenge and Cargill seek projects focused on drinking water in Brazil
Contribution reaches R$ 500,000 for each initiative that facilitates access to water and protects natural resources in priority basins
SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL (March 22, 2023) – Cargill and the Global Water Challenge (GWC) have just launched an initiative focusing on drinking water in Brazil. The Cargill Currents program seeks water projects that address water challenges faced by communities in five Brazilian states.
In this first phase of the program, approximately US$ 750,000.00 are planned to support the selected projects, with values ranging from R$ 100,000 to R$ 500,000 (in Brazilian currency). The estimate is that, if added together, the initiatives will benefit about 20 thousand people in the cities of Porto Velho (RO), Santarém (PA), São Félix do Xingu (PA), Rio Verde (GO), Sinop (MT), Cáceres (MT), São Desidério (BA) and Luís Eduardo Magalhães (BA).
The program is connected with Cargill's commitment to promote and encourage access to water and aligned with one of the United Nations Development Goals.
Cargill's Director of Corporate Responsibility, Flávia Tayama, explains that invitation letters are already being made to institutions that work with water resources management or that have the profile to present new proposals. "Through these partnerships, we want to increase access to sanitation and drinking water services, as well as invest in women's empowerment, as many of these projects are led by women. This is another contribution of Cargill with the communities that welcomed us", explains Flávia.
The Global Water Challenge is a coalition of leading organizations committed to achieving universal access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene (or WASH). Founded in 2006, it connects businesses, civil society partners and governments to catalyze financial support and drive innovation for sustainable solutions. More than 2 million people have already been reached by the programs around the world.
"We are excited to expand our partnership with Cargill in Brazil and congratulate Cargill on its dedication to developing water resilience in communities. With this new program, we will support the empowerment of communities by improving access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), as well as helping them create a more sustainable future for themselves," said Monica Ellis, CEO of GWC.
The partnership between Cargill and GWC has been an example of how organizations can transform realities by connecting communities with responsible projects. Through the initiatives, 500,000 people can benefit by 2030. Brazil is one of the key countries besides India, Indonesia, the Philippines and West African countries (Ghana, Ivory Coast and Cameroon). These countries were chosen by Cargill's presence as they are suppliers and host the company's operations.
In addition to the invitation letters that are being forwarded, it is possible to register projects until April 4 by email [email protected].
