Women in Cocoa

Celebrating women across the cocoa supply chain

Women’s economic empowerment is critical to a sustainable cocoa sector, and a cornerstone of the Cargill Cocoa Promise. Women’s economic wellbeing builds the capacity of the farms, and is directly linked to a more productive, quality crop, increased household income, better-educated and protected children, and enhanced health and nutrition.

At Cargill, we champion women across the cocoa value chain. Women play essential roles on farms and in coops, as well as in their communities. We encourage their contributions and strive to ensure they receive recognition while at the same time challenging stereotypes that can hold them back.

Honoring women’s diverse contributions to cocoa growing communities

We have published a vibrant overview of our work to improve access to economic opportunities for women in cocoa growing communities. This new leaflet showcases our own perspectives alongside those of our partners, and it brings to life the challenges and opportunities faced by women in the cocoa supply chain through their own stories.

Discover the stories of female role models across the cocoa supply chain

Our interactive storybook illustrates the contribution that women make to cocoa sustainability across the value chain. The book brings together stories from women working in West Africa’s cocoa sector – highlighting the progress as well as the challenges of gender equality in the sector.

Cargill and women’s economic empowerment

Cargill is taking a leadership role on women’s economic empowerment – we are working to offer the skills, the tools and the resources to empower women in cocoa communities. We are doing so systematically, at scale and across the value chain and our evidence-based approach means that we can quantify the difference we are making.

Taco Terheijden, Director of Cocoa Sustainability at Cargill Cocoa & Chocolate, shares some of his points of view on why a thriving cocoa sector is predicated on successful female role models. Read more...  (this will open a link outside the Cargill website)
