Sustainability in Sourcing, Production & Supply Chain
More consumers are holding themselves accountable, but are also demanding a higher level of transparency from food and beverage brands. Well-informed consumers are querying on what they buy, and want to know exactly where their purchases come from and how they are made. In this way, these consumers often choose products that support sustainability throughout the supply chain. In fact 3 in 5 consumers in Europe say “I research the environmental pledges of brands/manufacturers/retailers.”*
At Cargill, we are working to nourish the world in a safe, responsible and sustainable way, as well as to drive positive change across our supply chains. This includes creating a more sustainable raw material supply chain and also creating more sustainable production.

Delivering Sustainably To The Customers
Sustainability is at the heart of our Cargill Starches, Sweeteners and Texturizers sustainability strategy and it’s intertwined into every step of our global operations. That’s why we’ve committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our supply chain and production.
To reduce our impact on the environment, we have the goals of reducing emissions:
- We have committed to reducing emissions in our supply chain by 30% by 2030 per ton of product sold. We will achieve this through the use of regenerative agriculture.
- We have committed to reducing emissions in our production by 10% by 2025.

Sustainably Sourced Raw Materials
Farm Sustainability Assessment
Sustainable sourced raw materials externally and independently verified through third-party verification - Farm Sustainability Assessment (FSA). FSA is a standardized reference developed by SAI Platform, a food industry organization dedicated to advancing sustainable agriculture in the food chain. It’s designed to help producers assess their sustainable practices, and support manufacturers in the sourcing of sustainably grown products. Farmers are independently audited in order to support credible sustainability claims.
Cargill Starches, Sweeteners & Texturizers Europe is partnering with farmers to source third-party verified raw materials across our product lines – red seaweed, soy, corn, wheat, maize, stevia, and citrus fruits.
Externally verified and benchmarked at Silver level according to the Farm Sustainability Assessment. This level confirms whether the farmer is implementing sustainability actions on their farm that meet or are above European legislative requirements in the area of soil and water conservation, biodiversity, and crop protection.
Certified raw materials certified support agricultural practices in four priority areas:
Regenerative Agriculture
In addition to sourcing benchmarked at silver level according to Farm Sustainability Assessment, we are also promoting the transition to regenerative agriculture across Europe to mitigate climate change through carbon sequestration. By implementing regenerative agricultural techniques, farmers are able to increase productivity, while also reducing chemical inputs and soil tillage.
To reduce our impact on the environment through sustainable sourcing:
- We have set a global goal to provide training on sustainable agricultural practices and improve access to markets for 10 million farmers by 2030.
- We will focus our efforts on improving water availability and quality in the supply chains and regions where we can drive positive change.
