The Cargill Cocoa Promise
The Cargill Cocoa Promise is aimed at driving progress in the areas of farmer resilience, community wellbeing, environmental protection, and supply chain transparency – and we are already seeing positive results in these focus areas.
Cocoa production in Asia is driven by Indonesia, the fourth largest producer in the world. In Indonesia, Cargill has mapped 6,000 farms to provide better information on where and how cocoa beans are grown. We provide agricultural practices training to farmers, 20% of whom are women, to help ensure improved crop yields and continued interest in farming for the next generation. To meet additional community needs, nearly 15,000 farming households have received training on nutritional best practices, an important community challenge in the area we are working.
The Cargill Cocoa Promise must continue to evolve as the humanitarian and environmental landscape changes, and it is for this reason that Cargill has recently cemented our commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Setting a clear course of action towards 2030, we have adopted five new goals that link our commitment to delivering the UN Sustainable Goals (SDGs). These goals represent the broad and varying scope of our activities and are designed to encompass where we can make the most meaningful impact. Importantly, we have designed these goals to help us meet the needs of people in cocoa communities in a transparent, credible and measurable way.
