Cargill donates $3 million to Feeding America

With the new grant, Cargill is partnering with the largest hunger relief organization in the U.S. to help people in need by improving access to fruits and vegetables, strengthening food safety and investing in diabetes prevention.

The Feeding America nationwide network of food banks, a longstanding Cargill partner, provides more meals to children, families and seniors than any other domestic hunger-relief organization: four billion meals each year. Cargill’s investment will help enable Feeding America fill one of the biggest gaps reported by the people it serves: a lack of fresh fruits and vegetables.

While one in eight people in America, including 13 million children, struggle with hunger, six billion pounds of produce are lost each year. With Cargill’s help, Feeding America will establish regional cooperative mixing centers that source and distribute produce for local food banks in order to drive down cost and provide a greater variety of nutritious fruits and vegetables throughout the year.

Cargill is also supporting a diabetes prevention pilot that will help increase the understanding of the role of food bank programs in improving health outcomes for people living with nutrition-related chronic diseases. Evidence from the pilot will be used to design new health interventions.
