Fostering food science talent in Europe

November 29, 2013

Cargill recently sponsored The European Federation of Food Science and Technology (EFFoST) Student of the Year Award  to acknowledge the exceptional talent and next generation of food scientists in Europe.

This is the third time that Cargill has made this commitment to the industry and the six finalists will not only win prize money but get to spend time in Cargill’s European R&D facility in Vilvoorde, Belgium.

During their visit, the students will have the opportunity to learn more about the commercial side of the food industry, and hear from some employees on their chosen career paths and the work they do at Cargill. The students also will have the opportunity to present their prize winning work and receive feedback and questions from Cargill’s food scientists & technologists. The visit will conclude with a tour of Cargill’s state-of-the-art European Research and Development centre.

This year, the calibre of applicants was extremely high. The Award recognises those students that have had a paper accepted for publication in a peer reviewed food science journal or have obtained a patent (based on their work) in the field of food science and was open to European students currently studying for either a BSc/MSc in food science or technology disciplines.

This year, first prize in the PHD category went to Veronica Valli from the University of Bologna and first prize in the BSc/MA category went to Sara Bussler from The University of Berlin.
