General manager Marian Condilă walks slowly through the fields, stopping to scoop a handful of rich black earth into his palms, the foundation of a harvest shaped by weather, care and long-term investment in the land.

“Together with Cargill we have adopted regenerative practices, contributing to improved soil health and more stable yields,” Marian says. “The land is paying us back for our efforts and we are building a more stable future.” 

For Marian, farming is about more than this year’s crop. It is about protecting the productivity of the soil for the future while helping supply a food system that depends on consistency and resilience. with farmers

Cargill works with farmers and suppliers across multiple European origins, including Romania, Bulgaria and France, to secure consistent, high-quality sunflower crops. Sourcing from multiple countries helps reduce reliance on any single region, helping improve resilience and stability across those countries — and providing more flexibility and supply resilience in a market shaped by weather, logistics disruptions and changing customer demand.

There, the seeds are crushed and refined to meet strict European food safety and quality standards. The Amsterdam site connects European sunflower sourcing with downstream bottling and delivery, helping turn agricultural products into refined oil solutions for foodservice and retail customers across Western Europe.

The site also demonstrates how connected food systems can create operational and environmental benefits. Cargill’s Amsterdam refinery uses a biomass combustion boiler fueled by cocoa shells from the company’s Cocoa & Chocolate site in Zaandam. The system reduces greenhouse gas emissions by more than 19,000 tons per year. Together with renewable wind energy through Windpark Hanze, total emissions are lowered by 31,000 tons per year.

Izegem connects refined oil to Europe’s foodservice customers

Once refined, sunflower oil moves from Amsterdam to Cargill’s bottling facility in Izegem, Belgium.

Izegem is one of Europe’s largest edible oils bottling facilities. Centrally located in Belgium, the site helps serve foodservice customers across Western Europe with bottled oil formats used in quick service kitchens, including 5L, 7.5L and 10L packaging.

Cargill is investing nearly $15 million to double foodservice bottling capacity at Izegem to 140 million liters a year. An additional $11 million automation and innovation investment supports end-to-end bottling performance, layout optimization and blending capacity. Together, these investments help the site manage higher volumes and operational complexity while supporting reliable service to customers.

“Automation and innovation are driving the flexibility and reliability our customers count on,” says Alba Llorens, bottling plant manager in Izegem. “As we grow, we are also improving packaging by reducing the use of plastic and increasing the percentage of recycled PET in bottles.” 

The transformation also includes sustainability improvements. The site is transitioning from colored bottles to transparent bottles and from white to brown corrugated boxes while increasing the use of recycled PET packaging. Solar panels will provide nearly one-third of the bottling site’s annual energy consumption.
