Transforming the industry with CocoaAction
One example of how Cargill Cocoa & Chocolate is working with others to achieve our sustainability goals is our partnership with CocoaAction. In 2013, 10 companies involved in the cocoa supply chain, including suppliers and manufacturers, came together to create this initiative.
Under the umbrella of the World Cocoa Foundation, of which we are a leading member, CocoaAction aims to accelerate sustainability and improve the livelihoods of 300,000 cocoa farmers in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana by 2020. It represents an industry effort to coordinate all stakeholders – farmers, suppliers, manufacturers, governments, and others – in cocoa sustainability.
Farmer organizations offer a myriad of benefits to farmers – from improving access to markets and flexible finance, to promoting certification and providing training and tools to improve agricultural practices. For Cargill and its customers, the benefits we gain through our long-term relationships with farmer organizations set us apart in our ability to track the beans we buy at the farm level and drive positive change.
CocoaAction helps farmers increase their productivity by providing training, new planting material and fertilizer. The program is improving the livelihoods of farming communities by focusing on areas that will have most impact - education, gender parity and child labor.
CocoaAction’s progress will be measured according to six performance indicators, and will be publicly reported on a regular basis. You can read progress reports on the World Cocoa Foundation website, along with more details of the program and a list of members
With their emphasis on farmer and community livelihoods, the CocoaAction strategy, goals and programs are very much aligned to our sustainability goals. Working together with other players in the industry means we will be able to make significant progress more quickly than we could by acting alone. However, CocoaAction does not replace our individual strategy, and we will continue working hard to progress our Cargill Cocoa Promise and achieve our 2030 goals to ensure a thriving cocoa sector for the future.
