Our Commitments and Approach
Sourcing coconut oil sustainably and responsibly
Our commitments
Cargill is committed to sourcing coconut oil in an ethical, environmentally sustainable and socially responsible manner, that helps protect the long-term economic viability of farming businesses and in compliance with regulations and sound agricultural practices. We commit to a transparent and sustainable supply chain that:
- Promotes good agricultural and sustainable business practices across the coconut supply chain
- Supports smallholder coconut farmers to improve their livelihoods
- Protects the wellbeing of coconut farming communities
View our Sustainable Coconut Oil Sourcing Commitment for details. Cargill’s broader Policy on Forests and Human Rights Commitment govern our actions. We will collaborate and seek the support of suppliers, customers, governments, non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders to implement our Sustainable Coconut Oil Sourcing Commitment. We also expect our suppliers to uphold ethical business practices as outlined in our Supplier Code of Conduct.
Rainforest Alliance Certification
We offer Rainforest Alliance Certified oil. Rainforest Alliance is an international non-profit organization focused on protecting forests, improving the livelihoods of farmers and forest communities, promoting human rights and helping farmers mitigate and adapt to climate change. Cargill supports coconut farmers in achieving Rainforest Alliance certification to help them improve their income through increases in productivity and premium payments for their crops while protecting workers and the environment. Transparency
We are working to increase the visibility of our coconut supply chain to be able to track the origin and journey of the coconut products we source. Having greater visibility will help us identify and report risks and adverse impacts so that we can take appropriate action to remediate and prevent them. Knowing where the coconut we source comes from and how it is grown, also helps us to encourage the use of good agricultural practices and protect people and the environment.
Collaboration
The journey toward sector-wide sustainability is greater than the actions or interests of any one company. Cargill works closely with smallholder farmers and suppliers as well as regulators, government agencies, industry peers (in pre-competitive consortiums), customers, NGOs and donors toward our goal of achieving a sustainable and transparent coconut supply chain.
