In North America and around the world, sustainability is central to how we do business. As sustainability in cocoa becomes increasingly more important to consumers, our ambition is to accelerate progress towards a transparent global cocoa supply chain, to enable farmers and their communities to achieve better incomes and living standards, and to deliver a sustainable supply of cocoa and chocolate products.

The Cargill Cocoa Promise

Sustainability We focus on professionalizing cooperatives as we believe professional farmers’ organizations are needed to be a lever for improved farmer and community livelihoods. We support farmer organizations in achieving progress in farmer training, farm development, and community support. Working closely with our stakeholders and partners is crucial to our success.

Cargill Cocoa & Chocolate partners with multiple stakeholders to bring the Cargill Cocoa Promise benefits to cocoa growing communities.   Through our work with these partners, we are able to invest in and build programs that fulfill the Cargill Cocoa Promise.

Does sustainable cocoa certification matter?

The benefits of using certified sustainable cocoa and chocolate products are numerous. Purchasing certified sustainable cocoa and chocolate can enhance your brand, strengthen your supply chain and allow you to tell a more credible story around the origin of your products.

Over the past 20 years, three major independent certification organizations have been established: Fairtrade (International [FLO] and Fairtrade USA), Rainforest Alliance Certified and UTZ Certified.  Each organization aims to provide increased transparency and responsibility in cocoa supply chains.  They enable this by establishing economic, environmental and social standards which help farmers improve farming practices and farm more sustainably.  Certifying organizations, through their labels on packaging, signal to consumers that a product has been responsibly produced.

How does certification benefit cocoa growing communities?

  • For Customers Certification improves transparency and traceability in your supply chain.
  • Independent assurance adds credibility to sustainability claims.
  • Added brand value from connecting the benefits of the label to what you stand for.
  • The certification label helps you to promote your sustainability commitment.
