How We Approach Animal Welfare
It is a best practice for companies to formalize their approach to animal welfare in a policy, or equivalent document such as a statement of guiding principles, a code of practice or a sourcing charter. While the existence of a policy may not guarantee implementation, the absence of a policy is a clear sign that farm animal welfare is not a priority on a firm’s business agenda.
The effective implementation of a farm animal welfare policy relies on employees who are trained and competent to oversee the implementation of the policy, and on controls that allow the company to respond quickly and effectively in the event of non-compliance with the policy.
We are committed to leading our industry by developing and implementing best practices in the area of animal welfare. Our programs comply with, and often exceed, legal requirements. We ensure that the animals under our care are raised in an environment that satisfies their physical, nutritional and health needs, and they are treated in a manner that provides comfort.
We work extensively with our employees, farmer partners and others to ensure they are educated about how to properly handle behavior directed at animals by employees, suppliers or others in our supply chain.
