Cargill's Animal Welfare Global Policy
Cargill takes pride in being an industry leader in animal welfare, and we maintain high standards for ourselves and our suppliers.
We do not tolerate abusive behavior directed at animals by employees, suppliers, transporters, or others in our supply chains. Any deviation from this expectation may result in corrective action, including potential termination of our relationship.
All Cargill operations, suppliers, and external manufacturers involved in primary animal production, processing, or research involving animals must have a robust, systematic approach to animal handling in place that addresses management commitment, hiring practices, employee training, regular monitoring, documentation of deficiencies, and corrective actions. This must be demonstrated through documented compliance with industry standards or equivalent guidelines. Our expectation is that all Cargill suppliers around the world comply with all applicable laws and regulations.
We care for animals in a manner that embraces proven animal science, husbandry, and standards. We believe it is our obligation to ensure animals are healthy and identify solutions that enable animal health. In instances of injury or illness, animals should receive appropriate treatment. Antibiotics should be used responsibly and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
We work with a variety of stakeholders, including farmers and ranchers, customers, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), academics, scientists, and veterinarians to ensure that we employ best practices in animal welfare. Our animal welfare program meets or exceeds all applicable regulatory requirements. We are committed to educating and engaging our employees about the appropriate ways to care for and handle animals. We regularly review our animal welfare programs for continuous improvement and expect the same from our suppliers. Cargill continues to pioneer strategies and tools which improve animal welfare, and we leverage innovation to ensure our progress. We hold ourselves and our suppliers accountable for the humane treatment of animals.
