Leadership and Accountability
Cargill has a corporate animal welfare team. The team is led by Dr. Mike Siemens, Global Lead for Animal Welfare and Husbandry. Dr. Stephanie Cottee is the Global Poultry Welfare Lead and Lacey Alexander is the North American Beef Welfare Lead. Cargill family member Meghann Harker serves as the team’s corporate advisor. This team oversees the company’s implementation of farm animal welfare policy, from day-to-day management of farm animal welfare throughout the supply chain, to continuous improvement of overarching policies.
When looking at the management of farm animal welfare, activities associated with oversight and implementation responsibilities are important. Oversight is necessary to ensure that management is aware of farm animal welfare business implications and is prepared to intervene when appropriate (e.g. if there are differences between the organization’s farm animal welfare policy and business objectives). However, it is often the case that those charged with oversight have very little opportunity to effectively manage farm animal welfare at the farm level. Therefore, it is important to have qualified individuals responsible for ensuring the farm animal welfare policy is properly implemented, and farm animal welfare is effectively managed.
