Sustainable Palm Oil Solution

Helping food customers meet sustainable palm oil need

As consumers want to know more about where their food comes from, commodities like palm oil are drawing increased attention.

Oil palm trees can produce up to 10 times more vegetable oil per hectare than any other crop, and palm oil is a common food ingredient that makes its way into countless products we eat every day. Yet wider palm oil production has in some cases been linked to deforestation and other social and environmental issues.

To earn the trust of consumers, food manufacturers are increasingly looking for palm oil suppliers who do business responsibly and work to lead the palm oil sector toward true sustainability.

That's why Cargill's progress toward a 100 percent sustainable and traceable palm oil supply chain appeals to many Cargill customers.

Meeting customer needs

Cargill has been working toward 100 percent sustainability of its palm oil for more than a decade, having become an early member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) in 2004. Progress has been steady, with Cargill now able to trace 93 percent of palm oil in its global supply chains to the mill.

This excellence in transparency, traceability and sustainability stems from longstanding supply chain management expertise and a commitment to doing business the right way.

Beyond products and services, customers also rely upon Cargill’s broad network of partnerships with leading NGOs and other organizations.

Cargill belongs to the Midwest Row Crop Collaborative, which brings together industry and conservation leaders to scale up sustainability work protecting soil and water quality in the U.S. states of Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska.

And around the globe, in supply chains for all different commodities, Cargill partners with organizations like CARE, The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund and TechnoServe to ensure the long-term environmental, economic and social sustainability of agriculture. This broad-based engagement means that Cargill remains in touch with current perspective in the field, and can bring that to customers.
