Absorbing and gelling agents in ostomy care
Ostomy pouching systems affect well being and quality of life, making selection of the appropriate system a key element of ostomy care.
They are multi-phase systems consisting of a rubbery adhesive into which is dispersed absorbent and gel forming agents. When applied directly to opened wounds, these key components interact with the wound exudate:
- to form a more or less cohesive gel that helps create and maintain an optimal moist environment
- to maintain the adhesive system structure and cohesion
By its binding and its gel forming properties, high methoxyl citrus pectin perfectly complement the effects of other hydrocolloids such as gelatin and carboxymethyl cellulose.
