Medicated chewing gums

Sugar-free chewing gum is probably the most successful innovation in confectionery in recent years. Combining a tooth-friendly image with a softer, chewy texture and a cleaner refreshing taste, it appeals to the desire of today's consumer for healthier and tastier sweets.

The wide range of polyols produced by Cargill have been essential to this success, not only by replacing sugar as bulk sweetener but also by improving taste and sensorial properties. Sorbitol and maltitol syrups are used as key plasticizers while the high-performance powder polyols including sorbitol, mannitol, isomalt and erythritol modulate the chewy texture.

Deoiled lecithin is the admixture of choice to keep chewing gum soft and to prolong its shelf life. It also regulates adhesiveness, reduces undesirable tackiness and enhances the product's elasticity and stretch. The improved perception and longevity of flavor are also advantages.
