Engine Oils
Having worked with formulators for decades, we can help you overcome emerging challenges by developing new products and chemistry for you to achieve your goals.
Passenger car engine oil
Our engine oil additives directly impact the fuel economy of passenger cars, helping original equipment manufacturers meet emissions legislation. We are leading experts of lubricant additives and preside on many internal engine oil advisory councils and industry representative committees.
Friction modifiers for passenger car motor oil
Our Perfad™ range of organic friction modifiers (OFMs) have been evaluated using a wide range of commercial engine oils available in Europe, the United States of America, Japan and other regions of the world.
Base oil selection for passenger car engine oils
While friction modifiers are essential to help reduce friction in boundary and mixed lubrication regimes, selecting the correct base oil helps reduce friction in hydrodynamic conditions. Reduction of friction is achieved by using low viscosity base oils, which reduce the drag and lower traction under full film lubrication.
Our low viscosity Priolube™ ester baes oils have superior oxidation stability, low NOACK volatilities and excellent low temperature properties to help formulators meet new fuel economy requirements in low viscosity formulations. They can also be blended with Group III hydrocarbons, which often have lower NOACK volatilities than esters. In helping formulators achieve acceptable volatility, our low volatility esters also provide solubility of additives.
Heavy duty diesel engine oils (HDDEO's)
As experts in polymeric friction modifiers (PFMs), Group V base oils and surface repair additives, we help our customers achieve new standards and specifications by overcoming particulate filter blocking and piston deposits, whilst improving fuel economy and oxidation stability and reducing engine wear.
Friction modifiers for heavy duty engine oils
Friction modifiers and other additives are included at much higher treat rates in HDDEOs compared to passenger car engine oils. The additive content can be almost double that of passenger cars and dispersants and detergents perform a greater role. Whilst friction modifiers have not been an area of focus for HDDEO until recently, they now play an important part in low viscosity oils to reduce wear and friction.
Base oil selection for heavy duty engine oils
HDDEOs are moving to lower viscosity grades as newer engines are designed to operate with lower viscosity oils to reduce drag and improve fuel economy.
Formulating ester base oils into low viscosity engine oils allows the formulator to achieve higher viscosity index and obtain a low NOACK volatility at the same time. Esters are excellent solubilizers and can improve the detergency and dispersancy performance of the final formulation.
Motorcycle engine oils
Four stroke motorcycle engine oils with a manual transmission share the same oil between the engine and the gearbox. Furthermore, most manual transmission motorcycles have wet clutches - they are cooled and lubricated with the same oil as the engine and the transmission.

Marine engine oils
The International Maritime Organization's (IMO) 2020 international convention was designed to reduce pollution from shipping. The focus of the convention was to reduce Sulphur emissions from the main propulsion engines of marine vessels. Because most ships use fuel oil - which is high in Sulphur - it has forced ship operators to modify either their engines (installing scrubbers) or modify their fuels. Low Sulphur fuel oil has become more available and most ship operators have chosen to use this.
