With two-thirds of the calories of sugar, sorbitol is the most commonly used and economic polyol (sugar alcohol). Used as a sweetener, this reduced-calorie additive, with 60% of the sweetness of — sugar and colling effect, has also found favor from food manufacturers for its humectant and texturizing properties, particularly in snack foods and beverages. Available in powder or syrup.
