We're pledging to BeefUp our sustainability efforts.
Cargill recently launched BeefUp Sustainability, an initiative committed to achieving a 30% greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity reduction across its North American beef supply chain by 2030 from a 2017 baseline.
But it’s more than a pledge. It’s action, in partnership with producers, customers, NGOs and innovators, to amplify best practices and emerging ideas. BeefUp Sustainability builds on the strong environmental stewardship work already led by farmers and ranchers. By working together, agriculture is how we’ll ensure a safe, sustainable and affordable food system and address some of the most pressing challenges of our time.

Our beef supply chain is centered in North America – one of the most efficient places in the world to produce beef today. We know we can and must do better – and there’s even more we can do together.
Cargill is uniquely positioned to connect people across the entire supply chain from farm to fork – from the farmers who are growing crops that become feed for cattle, to the grocery stores and restaurants who deliver beef to dinner tables. BeefUp Sustainability is not only about bringing together very different perspectives, voices and insight – it’s about coming together to accelerate progress and ensure a safe, responsible and sustainable food system.
It’s core to our purpose, and it’s core to cultivating a better future for all of us.
We’re focused on impact
We are investing in science-based practices and building tailored programs in four key areas:
Grazing management
Looking at practices such as grazing management planning and adaptive management on range and pasture lands to understand how they impact sustainability outcomes related to soil, carbon storage, vegetation, wildlife habitat, water and other ecological parameters.
Feed production
Working with farmers to help implement emerging practices in the row crop space, such as fertilizer optimization and cover crops that reduce greenhouse gas emissions impact of feed ingredients.
Innovation
Investing in emerging technologies and sparking new ideas to reduce emissions, such as feed additives that target enteric emissions in cattle.
Food waste reduction
Looking at ways to partner with customers to reduce food waste, advancing efforts such as packaging innovation and shelf-life extension.

The 30% reduction builds on the industry’s existing greenhouse gas efficiency efforts and will equate to removing 2 million cars from U.S. highways for a year. With good conservation practices, cattle can play a critical role in preserving landscapes that contribute to climate benefits.
